Since 2001, communities nationwide have experienced “The Big Read,” a National Endowment for the Arts initiative to encourage reading, book discussion and a love of literature by choosing one book for all to read and share. “My Ántonia,” this year’s Big Read selection, develops the theme of immigration and a love affair with America's landscape. |
Willa Cather’s 1918 novel follows the spirited daughter of a Bohemian immigrant family who plans to farm the untamed land of Nebraska.
With Idaho Humanities Council support, The Cabin literary center brings Robert Thacker, a leading Cather scholar, to the City Club. In his remarks, Dr. Thacker will address the inspiration for this tale and its meaning for readers today.
Robert Thacker earned his Ph.D. at the University of Manitoba and has spent his career bridging American and Canadian literature. He is professor of Canadian Studies and Associate Dean for Academic Advising Programs at Saint Lawrence University in New York. Dr. Thacker has written and lectured extensively on Cather and edited “The Cather Studies, Vol. 4, Canadian and Old World Connections.” In 2007, he chaired the 11th International Cather Seminar, and in 1998 he served as president of the Western Literature Association.
