Just back from a year in Rome, author Anthony Doerr will read excerpts from his forthcoming memoir about his family’s four seasons in the Eternal City, touching on thunderstorms, produce markets, 1,500-year-old graffiti, changing diapers in Piazza Navona, horsemeat in the baby food, the death of Pope John Paul and the biggest funeral in the history of the world. Doerr’s graceful language, colorful anecdotes and lively presentation will kindle memories of Italy for some of us and entice others to venture in his footsteps. A member of The Cabin’s board of directors, Doerr also will entertain questions about the state of literature in Boise and the magic of books in general. |
Anthony Doerr is the author of two widely acclaimed books: The Shell Collector, which earned him the prestigious Hodder Fellowship from Princeton University and many literary accolades, and About Grace, his “intensely poetic first novel.” His fiction has appeared in O. Henry Prize Stories, Paris Review, Atlantic Monthly, Zoetrope: All Story, and The Best American Short Stories. He also writes a bimonthly column, "On Science," for the Boston Globe.
The Shell Collector, a volume of eight short stories published in 2002, won the Barnes & Noble Discover Prize, two O. Henry Prizes, the Rome Prize and the Ohioana Book Award. It was a New York Times Notable Book and an American Library Association Book of the Year.
About Grace, his first novel, was published in 2004. It was included in Best Books of 2004 by the Washington Post, won the Ohioana Book Award and was a finalist for the PEN USA fiction award.
In 2007, Scribner will publish Doerr’s third book, a memoir about living with his family in Italy for a year. He, his wife and two sons call Boise home.
