Everyone agrees air should be clear, clean and healthy, but achieving that with exponential growth in people, vehicle emissions and …well, even “cow emissions”…can be costly and politically touchy. Enter the Treasure Valley Air Quality Council, formed by the legislature in 2005 “to protect, preserve and, where necessary, improve the quality of air...while accommodating private, public and commercial activities." Since then, the council has evaluated air pollutants and control strategies and will submit its plan to legislators in February.
Peter S. O’Neill, chief advisor for strategic planning, O’Neill Enterprises LLC, graduated from Dartmouth College and Stanford University Business School. He came to Boise in 1965 to work with Boise Cascade Corp. In 1978, he created River Run, the first of many O’Neill-developed residential communities. His leadership positions include service on the Greater Boise Area Chamber of Commerce, the Boise Metro Economic Development Council, IdaCorp and Idaho Power Co., and Blueprint for Good Growth.
Dale Stephenson, Ph.D., CIH, directs undergraduate Environmental and Occupational Health and the Center for Excellence for Environmental Health and Safety at Boise State University, taught at the University of Utah and University of Idaho, and has conducted research in air quality and environmental aerosol monitoring. From 1991-1997, he worked in occupational health at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His career was inspired by his Peace Corps service in Mali, West Africa, improving water quality in rural villages.
