| Dr. Arthur Vailas |
A year ago, the Idaho State Board of Education named Dr. Arthur Vailas president of Idaho State University. The selection committee focused its search on candidates with health sciences expertise. Dr. Vailas’ notable experience teaching surgery and physiological science, conducting research at the National Institutes of Health and consulting for NASA on space biology gave him the edge. He assumed his new position on July 1, 2006. City Club is pleased to welcome Dr. Vailas to Boise and introduce him to our members on March 21.
Dr. Arthur C. Vailas (pronounced VAY-less), 55, was vice chancellor of all five University of Houston (UH) System campuses and vice president for research and intellectual property management at the UH main campus. He joined UH in 1995 as vice provost for graduate studies and professor and distinguished chair in biology and biochemistry. From 1988 to 1994, he held positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Schools of Education and Agriculture, College of Medicine, and Biodynamics Laboratory. His career in higher education administration began at UCLA in 1982. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Iowa and a B.A. degree from the University of New Hampshire, which he attended on a football scholarship.
