Larry Craig U.S. Senator, Idaho |
In the maelstrom of political rhetoric surrounding immigration, U.S. Sen. Larry Craig has sought middle ground, voting for enhanced border security but endeavoring to couple it with reforms that allow some undocumented workers to continue working in agriculture. He has supported adding hundreds of miles of fencing along the Mexico-U.S. border, using the National Guard to strengthen border security, providing Social Security benefits only to legal workers and capping the number of worker “green card” visas issued annually. He also voted to make English the national language.
Larry Craig was born on the family ranch near Midvale, served as student body president at the University of Idaho, and in the Idaho Senate from 1974 to 1980. He was elected to Congress in 1980, served in the House for four terms, won a U.S. Senate seat in 1990 and was re-elected in 1996 and 2002. A conservative, Sen. Craig supports the Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, limited taxation, private property rights and government accountability. He serves on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and its subcommittees, on the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Special Committee on Aging and the Committee on Environment and Public Works.
