Speaker Biography:

Dr. Ulrich studied English at University of Utah and earned her Ph. D. at the University of New Hampshire. In 1976, Ulrich wrote the now-famous phrase “well-behaved women rarely make history” which has taken on international significance and became the framework for her 2007 book with the same name. Dr. Ulrich’s work often centers on the lives and work of ordinary people in history, especially early Americans, and through that lens examines gender roles, community, and economics in history. Her most famous book, “A Midwife’s Tale,” was later the basis for a PBS documentary film and won a Pulitzer Prize. Dr. Ulrich was named a MacArthur Fellow, and is now 300th Anniversary University Professor, Emerita, at Harvard University.
