Government Subsidies for Private Companies: Good or bad for our Economy?
The CHIPS Act was passed by Congress in the summer of 2022 with a large bi-partisan majority. The Act is intended to shore up the US semiconductor industry with support of federal dollars. But are the long term effects likely to be good for our Economy, including our local Economy? Or does Government support damage our capitalist system?
Join City Club for an Evening Conversation with Dr. Peter Crabb and Dr. Rafael Ribas as they discuss the pros and cons of government programs like the CHIPS and Science Act.
Join us at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute classroom on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Speakers:
Dr. Peter R. Crabb, Professor of Finance and Economics, Northwest Nazarene University
Pete Crabb holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Oregon and an MBA in Finance from the University of Colorado. He is an active contributor in his field: publishing research on economics and finance in several peer-reviewed journals and authoring a regular financial economics column for the Idaho Statesman. Pete currently directs the Center for the Study of Market Alternatives at NNU and also serves as the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative.
Rafael Ribas, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Boise State University
Dr. Ribas joined Boise State University in 2021. His research is focused on firm creation and growth, education and social mobility, illicit markets, and individual acceptance and externalities of public policies. He is currently working on projects related to demand for housing near sex workers and cannabis dispensary, gender gap in management positions, social determinants of criminal behavior, and cultural influence on business practices. Education: Ph.D. Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014. MSc Economics, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2006. BA Economics, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, 2004
